Maybe my temperament makes me vulnerable to this, but I experienced loneliness in my family and in church, the definition of loneliness in a crowd. The line I liked the most was "Maybe something is going on in my head that I want to share with someone, but no one around me seems interested." It is not enough to shake hands and smile. I need to look for opportunities to reach out to others who might appreciate it. It helps to seek to meet others' needs, as well as to consiously fellowship with Jesus. He said we are to "abide in" Him and "walk in the Spirit". In that way, we truly are never alone, but the Bdy of Christ is intended to be a source of emotional support. Sometimes people get in the habit of only talking to their friends and family and forget to be aware of others God might want to bless them with or use them to bless.

I agree. There was a time in my life wh...

Loved your article!
There was a time in my life when "lonely in a crowd" was my theme! I was so painfully shy. I couldn't figure out how in the world I could be so surrounded by people and still feel so empty and alone. You know what? Bible study was the only source of relief for me too! In His word I discovered so much about Him and who He says I am and what He is doing in and around me and what I can do through Him. He took care of the empty and lonely part because He filled me so full to the point of overflowing! Now in a crowd, instead of drawing up inside myself, I love sharing that overflow of Him. Standing there alone, I feel Him with me and find someone to connect with in some way-even if it's just a smile. Being in His word makes want to go stand in the middle of crowds of strangers and just look for opportunities to show them they aren't alone either! :) Those painful lonely shy experiences have given me eyes to recognize the same thing in others. Now He lets me seek them out and give them that little extra love I craved when I stood in those shoes.
